The Client Who Never Had a Complaint
She booked the hour for her sister. Twenty minutes in, she handed me two birth dates and asked which chart was worse. The one in her own hand carried 未 in both the month and day branches. She had nursed a parent through four years of decline and kept a business open through a divorce. When I asked how she was, she said fine in a way that closed the subject, then asked me to judge her sister's luck.
What the Goat Is
The Goat is a yin Earth branch and the eighth of the twelve Earthly Branches, written 未 and read wei, in the southwest. Its solar month is the last of summer and its double hour runs 13:00 to 15:00, the stretch the old hour names call 日昳. Three stems hide inside it, all three yin: 己 (ji), yin Earth, holds the seat, 丁 (ding) carries yin Fire, and 乙 (yi) keeps a trace of yin Wood. The Chinese zodiac renders the animal as Goat, Sheep or Ram, depending on the translator.
The Branch That Means Both Ripe and Dim
The Shuowen Jiezi opens on a homophone. 未,味也。六月,滋味也。五行,木老於未。象木重枝葉也。 Wei means flavor. In the sixth month the flavors are fully present, and wood grows old in Wei. The character pictures a tree with its leaves layered. The Book of Pitch has 未者,言萬物皆成,有滋味也, in Wei the ten thousand things are complete and carry taste. The Han calendrical treatise has 昧薆於未, dimness gathering there. The Shiming resolves the run in one line, 未,昧也。日中則昃,向幽昧也, the sun past the meridian turning toward the dark.
Ripeness and dimming inside one character. The Huainanzi adds the season's shape, 木生於亥,壯於卯,死於未: wood is born at Hai, strengthens at Mao, dies at Wei. The Erya names the year-star, 太歲在未曰協洽.
The Animal Whose Name Sits Inside the Word for Good
The animal's own Shuowen entry runs three characters: 羊,祥也, the goat means auspiciousness. Duan Yucai's note is the line I use with clients, 考工記注曰:羊,善也。按譱義羑美字皆从羊, with 譱 the older form of 善: the words for goodness, righteousness and beauty all build on this character. This animal's name is the root of the words people most want said of them.
The Book of Rites names the offering by its coat, 羊曰柔毛, soft-furred, and the monthly ordinances call it 羊,火畜也, a fire domestic animal. That gloss is easier to trust once you know the hidden stems: 丁, yin Fire, sits inside this dry earth.
The Goat Years
| Years | Pair | Element | Step in the sixty |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1931, 1991 | 辛未 | Metal | 8 |
| 1943, 2003 | 癸未 | Water | 20 |
| 1955, 2015 | 乙未 | Wood | 32 |
| 1967, 2027 | 丁未 | Fire | 44 |
| 1979, 2039 | 己未 | Earth | 56 |
The Goat Month
The month is the sixth solar month, late summer, opened by Xiaoshu and closed by Liqiu. In 2026 it is 乙未 under the five-tiger rule for a Bing year, from July 7 at 09:57 to August 7 at 19:43 Beijing time.
The Book of Rites has an instruction for this stretch. 季夏之月,樹木方盛,乃命虞人入山行木,毋有斬伐. The trees are at their fullest, and the order goes out that nothing is to be cut. The weather arrives in four characters, 土潤溽暑, the earth damp and steaming, with rain on schedule, and the season at its heaviest is the season the canon forbids harvesting.
The pitch pipe is 林鐘, and the Book of Pitch says of it, 六月也,律中林鐘。林鐘者,言萬物就死氣林林然。其於十二子為未。未者,言萬物皆成,有滋味也. The Lin Bell is the pipe named for things going to their death with the qi gathered like a forest. In the twelve branches this is Wei. The ten thousand things are complete and have flavor, which is the pairing the Shuowen made.
The Palace
The twelve stations assign 未 the division 鶉首, the Quail's Head, and the Song-Yuan compilation 天原發微 closes it in four characters, 鶉首會未. The same passage names the lodges inside it, 井木為犴,鬼金為羊: the Well is the wild dog, the Ghost is the goat in the metal slot. Few lodges among the twenty-eight carry a zodiac animal's own name.
The 說卦 gives the Lake trigram its animal, 兌為羊, and the month cycle gives the Goat Retreat (遁), hexagram 33, two yielding lines at the base under four firm ones.
What the Goat Touches
六合 午未合化土. The Horse combines with the Goat, and the pair transforms into earth. One sits at the peak of fire, the other in the dry earth after it. The combination settles.
三合 亥卯未 forms Wood. With the Pig and the Rabbit, the Goat holds the storage seat, 木庫, the vault of wood. The Dragon keeps the water vault. This one keeps wood's, in the branch where wood is said to die.
六沖 丑未 is the loud one. The Ox faces the Goat, two earth vaults head to head. Nothing transforms in that contact and both sides are storage, so it reads as two storerooms with no door between them. 六害 子未 puts the Rat in the harm relation, and 六破 未戌 puts the Dog in the breakage.
三刑 丑戌未 is the earth punishment, and the Goat is one of its three seats. I name the branches rather than pick a label, because the sources split. 《三命通會》 quotes 《三車一覽》 assigning 恃勢 to the Tiger, Snake and Monkey and 無恩 to the Ox, Dog and Goat, then says that reading also holds. The seat the canon calls auspicious is one of them.
The Shadow of the Good Name
She was the family's soft-furred one, praised into the role for decades. The word for her goodness is built on the character of this animal, and a name that sits inside 善 and 美 gathers a certain kind of chart, or a certain kind of family.
Carl Jung gave the wrapping its name. In Two Essays on Analytical Psychology the persona is the face a person assembles for the outside world, and he described the work in one direction: "The aim of individuation is nothing less than to divest the self of the false wrappings of the persona." Read that against 羊,祥也 and the work comes into focus. A good name is a wrapping like any other, with a price that never gets listed.
Under the surface the price shows. Jung's account of meeting the shadow begins with a dead balance, a standstill that hampers moral decisions, the stage the alchemists called nigredo, and he holds that every descent of that kind is followed by an ascent. In a Goat chart that standstill looks like pleasantness. The complaint never gets made, the heat stays banked inside 丁, and the body keeps a different ledger.
The Shiming line 日中則昃, the sun past the meridian turning toward the dark, describes what happens to a reputation for being the reasonable one. It holds up well and cannot hold all day. The dry earth of 未 is also soil where wood is stored, 木老於未, wood grown old rather than cut. Someone twenty years into the habit of waiting is not unfeeling. That person is seasoned, banked, and more tired than the reputation admits.
Working With a Goat Chart
Count the yeses. For one week, mark every agreement you made without wanting to. The exercise usually produces a pattern rather than a list, and that is where the persona lives.
Name what you tasted. The branch is called flavor, so the test is literal. Write what you enjoyed on one side of a page and what you endorsed on the other. The second column runs longer and quieter.
Keep the uncut month. The Book of Rites forbids cutting timber in this month. Pick one thing you will not hand over this season, small enough to hold in a bad week, and tell one person you are holding it.
Journal prompt. Write the complaint you have not made, in plain language, with no apology on the front of it. You do not have to send it. You do have to write it down.
What She Said
She came back four months later. She had told the family she was not doing the long drives any more, and her sister called it a phase. The argument ran shorter than she feared. Then she said the part I wrote down: the strange thing was the room left over afterward, and she had not known what to do with that much space.
