Some charts only ever move in one direction. The woman across from me had spent nine years building one career, and every branch she was proud of pointed at the same door. She called it a lack of options. Her chart showed three branches from one family sitting in three separate pillars.

The three harmonies (三合, san he) are a set of four fixed branch triads that fuse into one working configuration of a single element when all three of their members appear in a chart. Each triad is assembled from the same three seats: the branch where that element is born, the branch where it peaks, and the branch where it is stored. Read together, the three branches describe one element's full arc rather than three separate signs. The manuals call the fused result a 局, a configuration, and it behaves less like a trait than like an engine (Earthly Branches).

Four Sets, Twelve Seats

Four rows hold the whole set.

TriadElementBornPeaksStored
Dragon
Goat
Dog
Learn those four rows and the scaffolding of any chart becomes visible at a glance. Nine charts in ten that reach my desk hold two members of some set, and the tradition treats a full set as a change of kind.

Where the Sets Come From

The familiar explanation, quoted from a calendar manual called 三車一覽, follows the life of the element. Water is born at 申, reaches full power at 子, and settles at 辰. Wood, fire and metal do the same.

三命通會 replaces that reading with a stranger one. The Ming compendium, first printed in 1578, reports that the four sets open their breath at identical marks on the hundred-mark water clock the imperial astronomers used to keep time. 申子辰 opens at the first mark, 巳酉丑 at the twenty-sixth, 寅午戌 at the fifty-first, 亥卯未 at the seventy-sixth. Four unrelated groups, four matching marks. The writer calls it 天道自然之妙, the natural wonder of how things run.

One 刻 stayed one hundredth of a day until 1628 (ke). I have written about the three stars that hang off these same sets in a separate piece, and what matters here is the shape of the set itself.

A Body With Three Parts

The same chapter offers a second reading, and this one is psychological. A three harmony works the way a single body works. Essence is the origin, and breath is the root of spirit. Essence is the mother of breath, and spirit is its child. Mother and child generate each other, and when the three stay whole and undispersed, the result is a harmony.

The branches carry the same family grammar. In the water set, 申 is the mother of 子 and 辰 is its child. Water is born at 申, prospers at 子, and at 辰 the breath produces, completes and stores. Birth, ripening and harvest arrive in that order.

A triad looks like a division of labour inside one person: the part that starts things, the part that drives them to full power, and the part that puts them away. Most charts I open are strong in one job and thin in another. One client can launch ten projects and finish none.

Why Three and Not Two

The chapter keeps the arithmetic strict. Two things transform, and that is what a single yin and a single yang means. Three transform into three, and that is what brings things into being. Lose one member and no configuration forms.

That line separates the triads from the branch pairs in the six combinations. A pair is a relationship and exists the moment its two branches appear, while a triad only works once all three are gathered.

The Member Nobody Names

Four sets, four elements, twelve branches. Earth never appears. Earth goes unlisted because the other four depend on it to complete their configurations, and because everything finishes by returning to earth. The unnamed member is the medium the named ones run in. One clause of exception follows. Gather all four earth branches and they form an earth configuration of their own.

Jung spent a long essay on the same problem. In the paper collected in Psychology and Religion: West and East, he argues that a figure of three is unfinished and that something has to be missing from it. Arrangement in triads, he writes, is an archetype that in all probability formed the basis of the Christian Trinity. He then asks where the fourth went. His answer is that Western doctrine pushed it out: matter, evil, the feminine, whatever would not fit the shape. He calls it the problem of the fourth, and he treats the quaternity as the figure the psyche reaches for when it wants to be whole.

A strong three with a suppressed fourth is the ordinary condition of any trained mind. The capacity you exercise most is the one you trust, and the capacity opposite it stays undeveloped. Jung named that one the inferior function. 三命通會 has no such vocabulary and arrives at the same place from the other end, having noticed that the four triads never name earth and that earth is what carries them.

What the Configuration Does in Your Chart

What a completed triad means depends on who is reading the chart. If your chart gathers one, the configuration is useful, and useful carries a specific sense for a fire day master like 丙 or 丁. The wood set 亥卯未 arrives as 印, the resource that feeds the fire. Metal's 巳酉丑 arrives as 財, wealth, because fire controls metal. Water arrives through 申子辰 as 官, authority, because water controls fire. Earth, 辰戌丑未, arrives as 傷, the drain, because fire produces earth and spends itself doing so.

The same three branches read as support, money, identity, obligation or depletion depending on one stem in the day pillar. Two sets also draw their most useful member inward. 丙 with 巳酉丑 and 丁 with 寅午戌 each gather their own prosperity seat, 丙 keeping its 禄 at 巳 and 丁 at 午. 珞琭子 calls the pattern 禄有三會, a threefold meeting of prosperity. 壺中子 puts it another way, 得一分三, take one and divide it into three.

What the Triad Meets

The verdict on any triad stays conditional, and the manual states it in six characters that took me years to believe. Joined to a helpful star it behaves as help, and joined to a damaging one it behaves as damage. The closing warning goes further. Do not fix on the three sets and the six pairs alone. Check which branch carries weight, whether the palace has taken damage, and what the hidden stems underneath it are doing in the chart.

That sentence is why I will not read a compatibility question from triads alone. Three gathered branches describe an engine. What the engine drives gets decided in the rest of the chart, and in what the person does with the power once it arrives. The damage sets are worth reading beside this one, and I went through the three punishments for the same reason.

An Exercise: Naming Your Fourth

Write the four rows out by hand. Mark every branch your chart holds, in pillar order from year to hour. Then sit with three questions.

  • Which seat do you lead with, the one that starts, the one at full power, or the one that stores?
  • Where does the missing member show up in your behaviour, the part of the job you always hand to someone else?
  • What have you outsourced to keep the unnamed element unnamed?
  • The last question is the one the triads cannot answer. If the unnamed member is the medium the other four depend on, then the capacity you never developed is often the one quietly holding the rest together.

    Notes From the Reading Room

None of this forecasts a life. The chapter closes by warning readers off that habit, and the sentence I keep returning to concerns earth: four sets named, one member left out, and the missing one is the container. Fifteen years of reading charts has taught me to look for the same thing in people. The part that never gets mentioned in the session is usually the part holding everything else up. The Four Pillars calculator will lay your own chart out.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the three harmonies in BaZi?▼
The three harmonies are four fixed sets of three Earthly Branches, each set holding the seat where one element is born, the seat where it peaks, and the seat where it is stored: water in 申子辰, wood in 亥卯未, fire in 寅午戌, metal in 巳酉丑. In my fifteen years of reading charts I treat a complete set as one engine rather than three separate qualities, because the three seats only do their work when all three are present.
Do the three harmonies decide compatibility between two people?▼
They describe a working configuration, not a verdict on a match. Two people whose branches gather into the same set often share a rhythm, which is why the triads get used as compatibility groups in the popular books. The manual is more careful. It says a triad joined to a helpful star reads as help and a triad joined to a damaging one reads as damage, which puts the outcome in the rest of the chart rather than in the three branches alone.
What happens when only two of the three branches appear in a chart?▼
The chapter is blunt about this. Lose one of the three and no configuration forms, and you should not read the partial set as if it were whole. Most charts I see hold two members of some set. Two branches make a leaning, and I read a leaning as a direction of travel rather than as an engine already running.
Why is earth left out of the four sets?▼
The text says the other four all depend on earth to complete their configurations, and that everything finishes by returning to earth, so earth cannot be listed as a fourth member beside them. It is the medium they run in. The chapter adds one exception. Gather all four earth branches, 辰戌丑未, and they form an earth configuration of their own.
How do I find the three harmonies in my own chart?▼
Get your Four Pillars, list the four branches in order from year to hour, and sort them against the four rows. Whatever repeats is worth your attention. In a reading I look first at which of the three seats is missing and where the missing member sits in the person's life, since that gap usually explains more than the branches that are present.
