The Roof Over One Chart
A woman I will call Dana came to me because her work was good and her room was empty. She had built a small business alone, taught herself three crafts, and spent most evenings in a studio with the door shut. Her question was narrow. Why does the work land with the few people who see it and reach nobody else? One marker in her hour pillar described the shape of her life better than anything else on the page. In the Chinese system it is called the Canopy.
What a Star Is in BaZi
The 神煞, usually translated as spirit killers, are a family of named markers read off a single stem or branch of a chart. Each one carries a picture rather than a forecast. A general pitching camp in the middle of his own army, the tent at the exact centre of the formation. A canopy spread over the emperor's seat. A pool where the sun goes down to bathe. The manuals give each one a chapter and then spend half that chapter arguing about what it means in practice. All three come from the same place inside the chart.
Where the Three Stars Come From
The twelve Earthly Branches fall into four groups of three. 申子辰, 巳酉丑, 寅午戌, 亥卯未. Each group holds the birth seat, the peak seat and the storage seat of one element, which is why the groups are called the three harmonies. Water is born at 申, peaks at 子, and is stored at 辰, so those three branches form the water group. Metal, fire and wood run the same way.
The common explanation comes from a book called 三車一覽, which 三命通會 quotes before correcting it. A triad, the manual argues, is assembled from a clock rather than from an element's life story. 三命通會, the Ming compendium first printed in 1578, reports that each group's opening breath begins at the same mark on the hundred-mark water clock the astronomers used to divide a day. 申子辰 opens at the first mark, 巳酉丑 at the twenty-sixth, 寅午戌 at the fifty-first, 亥卯未 at the seventy-sixth. Four groups, four identical marks, and the writer calls the coincidence 天道自然之妙, the natural wonder of the way things run.
The General at the Centre
將星 means general star, and 三命通會 defines it by the position the marker takes inside its own triad. 將星者,如將劄中軍也, a general pitching his tent in the middle of the camp. The 洞玄經 reads 將星處乎中軍, the general sits in the central army.
The interesting half is the company the marker keeps. 凡將星常欲吉星相扶, the General wants good stars holding it up, and 貴煞加臨, a noble marker on top. Where that support exists the manual reaches for the top of the civil ladder, 出將入相, a general in the field and a minister at court. A General with the 亡神 beside him becomes 為國棟樑臣, a beam of the state. Where the support is missing the entry goes quiet.
Jung used the word Self for the organising centre of the psyche, the point he said the whole personality arranges itself around, which is what the General pictures. After years of reading charts I would say the General asks whether the centre of a life was chosen. A person can hold the seat and still obey an order from childhood. The tent stands in the centre of the camp and the general inside it has not spoken in years.
The Canopy and the Price of Being Uncommon
華蓋 is the storage seat of the group. 三命通會 explains the name with a picture from the sky, 天有此星,其形如蓋,常覆乎大帝之座, there is a star in heaven shaped like a canopy that covers the emperor's seat. The 洞玄經 reads 華蓋張乎庫土, the canopy spread over the storage earth. The compilers filed Canopy and General under one heading, since both come from the triad.
Then the chapter turns. 壺中子 calls the Canopy the star of craft and a mark of the artisan's hand. 燭神經 describes its temper as 曠達神清性靈恬淡寡慾, open, clear-spirited, few wants, and adds 一生不利財物, little advantage in money. 理愚歌 gives the cost in plain language. 華蓋星辰兄弟寡,天上孤高之宿也, few siblings, a lodging set high and alone in the sky. The same poem lists the outcomes, a gifted son, a widow, a man who marries into another family, a figure in robes at a shrine. 林開 adds the conditional that decides which one you get. 印墓同華品格清, with the seal and the tomb the character runs clear, 重重臨印即公卿, and if the seat is broken and hollow instead, 便是幽閒藝術人, you get a quiet person who makes art.
The manual states talent and solitude in one breath and apologises for neither. Jung spent the years after his break with Freud in that weather, filling the private journals that later became the Red Book and leaving them unpublished. The work his later essays grew from came out of a room with the door shut.
If a Canopy sits in your chart, the honest question is not whether you are gifted. It is what the aloneness is for.
The Peach Blossom Is Not a Verdict
咸池 carries the newest name of the three and the oldest image. The 淮南子, compiled in the second century BCE, says the sun rises at 扶桑 and enters the 咸池 at evening. The pool is where the sun bathes before it sets, so the name attached itself to the bathing station, the second of the twelve stages a stem walks through. The twelve stages place 沐浴 just after birth, which is why the Peach Blossom always sits one branch past the birth seat of its group. The manual hands it two other names in the same line, 一名敗神,一名桃花煞, ruin spirit and peach blossom killer.
What the classics do with it depends on support. 如生旺則美容儀耽酒色, in a strong seat it gives a good face and a taste for wine and beauty. 如死絶落魄不檢, in a dead one it gives a shabby man with a loose mouth and no credit. One marker, two lives, and support decides which.
Most online Peach Blossom writing leaves out a warning the chapter aims at its own readers, 按此煞須天干納音於地同類方是,若只論寅午戌在卯,天干納音或不屬火非是. Find a 卯, call it a Peach Blossom, and the Ming compilers say you are not reading the star. The marker counts when the stem's element matches the branch.
Jung wrote that psychic energy expresses itself only through symbols, which is as close as analytical psychology comes to a technical account of these markers. The Peach Blossom is where desire becomes visible in a chart. He also drew the line I keep near my desk, that the meeting with the shadow is the apprentice piece and the meeting with the anima is the masterpiece. Both operate in this marker. What people find attractive in you is rarely only yours, and the person you cannot stop thinking about is usually carrying part of your own appetite.
What the Classics Refuse to Say
The manual would be easy to mock if it stopped there. The 六合 chapter states its own principle in a single line, 子合丑福輕,丑合子福盛, one direction of a pair reads light and the reverse reads heavy. 珞琭子 puts the method in eight characters, 明合不如暗合,拱實不如拱虛, the combination you cannot see beats the one you can.
Every one of these stars is a relation between seats, and the same seat reads differently depending on what stands beside it. That is why my readings start with support, not with the marker.
An Exercise: Find Your Own Marker
Take your four branches, year, month, day and hour, and look for two or three in one group from the table above. The middle seat of a group gives you a General, the storage seat a Canopy, the branch one step past the birth seat a Peach Blossom. Most people hold none of the three.
Then write one page and answer the one question that matches the seat you found. If the Canopy landed, what did the aloneness produce, and who has seen any of it. If the General landed, ask what your centre is obeying. If the Peach Blossom landed, what have I put on another person that belongs to me.
A Closing Note
Dana came back four months later with a video series and a small audience that watched every instalment. Her chart had not changed. She had stopped treating her solitude as a fault to be repaired and started treating it as the workshop it had always been. That is the use I make of these markers.
