Every September, the question in my inbox changes. All summer, clients ask me what a transit means. In September they ask when it starts. I have been reading charts for fifteen years, and I have learned to respect that shift. A retrograde you can see coming is a tool. The one that ambushes you costs you rescheduled flights and misread texts.
Mercury retrograde is an apparent backward motion of the planet Mercury that happens three or four times a year for about three weeks, when the fastest planet in the solar system laps the Earth on its inner orbit and appears to reverse through the zodiac from our vantage point Wikipedia: Apparent retrograde motion. The reversal is an optical effect, the same illusion you get when a faster train passes a slower one and the slower train seems to slide backward. Mercury never changes course. Our position changes, and the sky performs a U-turn that the psyche reads instantly.
Mercury orbits the Sun in 88 days, so it laps us about every 116 days. The retrogrades therefore arrive on a rhythm of roughly four months apart, and they repeat through the same signs for several cycles in a row. In 2026 that rhythm produces three reviews: one in Pisces, one in Cancer, one in Scorpio.
Carl Jung gave this reversal a psychological name: enantiodromia, the tendency of every psychic extreme to tip into its opposite Wikipedia: Enantiodromia. Mercury rules the part of the mind that moves outward, the speech, planning, sorting, and sending. When that motion reverses, the mind does not break. It turns around and walks back through its own output, which is why old drafts, old contacts, and old conversations surface during a retrograde like fish returning upstream. I wrote a longer account of the psychology behind the pause if you want the theory. This article is the calendar.
The 2026 Mercury Retrograde Schedule
All dates below are Eastern Time and shift a few hours elsewhere. Each retrograde carries a shadow period that begins before the station and ends after the direct turn.
| Retrograde | Dates | Sign | Shadow period |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | Feb 26 to Mar 20 | Pisces | Feb 11 to Apr 9 |
| Second | Jun 29 to Jul 23 | Cancer | Jun 13 to Aug 7 |
| Third | Oct 24 to Nov 13 | Scorpio | Oct 4 to Nov 30 |
February 26 to March 20: The Pisces Review
Pisces rules the stories we tell when no one is listening: the private mythology, the half-finished dream, the belief that outgrew its evidence. Mercury spent this retrograde walking backward through your assumptions. In my practice this is the window where clients renegotiate their relationship with a promise they made to themselves years ago. One woman I worked with spent the month circling a resignation letter she had drafted in 2019 and never sent. By the time Mercury turned direct on March 20, she had stopped polishing the letter and started outlining the work she wanted next. The review had done its job before she made a single move.
The pre-shadow began on February 11, which is when the theme usually announces itself as a vague restlessness or a dream that lingers. The post-shadow runs to April 9. Decisions made in the last week of March tend to stick. The ones forced in the first week of February usually need revisiting.
June 29 to July 23: The Cancer Review
Cancer rules home, family, and the feeling body: the place you come from, the people you protect, the moods you were taught were acceptable. A Cancer retrograde is a domestic audit. It surfaces conversations with parents that were tabled, housing decisions that were deferred, and the quiet question of who takes care of the caretaker. Clients report dreams of childhood houses in this window more than in any other, and I tell them to treat the dreams as mail.
The post-shadow of this retrograde runs to August 7, so the theme lingers into Leo season. I have seen August arguments trace straight back to June silences. If a family conversation went unfinished in July, it is still open, and September is a better month than October to close it, because October belongs to the year's deeper work.
October 24 to November 13: The Scorpio Double Retrograde
Now the year's real event. Venus stations retrograde on October 3 and turns direct on November 14, the first Venus retrograde since the spring of 2025. Venus retrogrades are the rarest of the personal planet reversals, roughly one every eighteen months, and this one unfolds almost entirely inside Scorpio. On October 24, Mercury stations retrograde in the same sign, and the two planets travel backward together until November 13. Both stations land in Scorpio season, the Sun's annual passage through the sign from late October to late November.
Scorpio rules what we hide, what we share, what we owe, and what we are owed: intimacy, joint money, inheritance, envy, the conversations everyone circles. To have both the mind and the heart reviewing in that territory at once is the psychic equivalent of inventory day. Mercury audits your words and your decisions. Venus audits your attachments and your desires. Neither will stay quiet.
In fifteen years of practice, I have seen Venus retrograde periods bring more relationship disclosures than any transit except Saturn return. Old partners resurface. Old money questions return. The sentence you swallowed in July comes back for a second attempt. Jung would not have blinked. He treated the sky as a symbolic language the psyche already speaks, and he coined the term synchronicity for the meaningful coincidences that cluster around such windows Wikipedia: Synchronicity. A double retrograde in Scorpio is the psyche scheduling its own year-end audit, complete with the topics it avoided all year.
How to Work the Dates
Three movements, and each has a use. The pre-shadow, which for the October retrograde begins around October 4, is when the theme first knocks: the draft resurfaces, the name reappears, the question gets asked in a milder form. Notice it, name it in writing, and do nothing yet. The retrograde proper, October 24 to November 13, is for revision: rewrite the draft, renegotiate the terms, revisit the relationship with full attention and no performance. The post-shadow, running to November 30, is when the change settles into ordinary life. Most people report that the decision they dreaded in late October feels obvious by mid-December.
The rule I give every client is simple: if it can be revised, start it. If it cannot, wait. Book the flights you can change. Sign the lease you can exit. Leave the launch, the debut, and the grand gesture for a cleaner sky, because launching anything in the October window means doing it while Mercury and Venus both walk backward through your reasons.
For the shadow work, one page is enough. Take a sheet of paper and divide it into three columns: what resurfaced, what I postponed, what I only admit when I slow down. Date the page October 24 and add one line per day until November 13, without rereading anything you wrote. On the 13th, read the page as if a client had handed it to you, and write below it what you would tell them. That second part is where the reading happens. The retrograde supplies the material. You supply the interpretation, and that division of labor is the whole art of working with the sky.
Write the October dates in your calendar now, while the sky is quiet. The double retrograde will arrive with or without your preparation, but readiness changes what it finds. When it opens, slow down, open the drawer, and read what you wrote. That is the whole assignment.
