The client everyone described as good
In my practice there is one kind of reading I have learned to slow down for. A client arrives described by everybody around her as good. Kind, patient, easy to be near. Then she sits down and says, in a flat voice, that she has no idea who she would be if she stopped agreeing with people.
BaZi has a name for the gap between a person who is warm and a person who has learned to look warm. It sits in a short chapter of the San Ming Tong Hui (三命通會), the Ming compendium compiled by Wan Minying and first printed in 1578, and most English introductions skip the chapter entirely.
De Xiu is a pair of BaZi markers that names, for each birth month, the stems carrying that season's own element and the stem combination that transforms into the same element. De (徳) means virtue. Xiu (秀) means refined, elegant, the finished surface of a thing. Both attach to the month you were born in, and neither asks about your day master.
What the manual gives you
The chapter 論徳秀 is one paragraph long. It opens by splitting the name in half, and the two halves are doing different jobs.
徳者本月生旺之徳, de is the flourishing virtue of the month itself. 秀者合天地中和之氣五行變化而成者也, xiu is what forms when the five elements transform into the balanced breath of heaven and earth. A second gloss follows. De is 陰陽解㐫之神, the spirit that unties misfortune. Xiu is 天地清秀之氣, the clear qi of the world and the spirit that prospers in its own season.
Then four rows. Nothing else. No explanation of where the stems came from.
The four rows
| Month triad | Season | De (徳) | Xiu (秀) |
|---|---|---|---|
A worked example makes the table easier to hold. Take a chart with the month branch at 午. That belongs to the fire triad of 寅午戌, so the de stems are 丙 and 丁, and any 丙 or 丁 sitting on a year, month or hour stem carries the de. The xiu needs both halves of 戊癸 to be present, because a combination only transforms when the partner shows up. Half a pair is a stem with a job and nobody to do it with.
The rule under the table
Look at the de column first. Fire months get 丙 and 丁, water months 壬 and 癸, metal months 庚 and 辛, wood months 甲 and 乙. That is the season's own element in its yang and yin form, and a student can produce it from memory in the first week.
The xiu column runs on a different machine. Every BaZi student learns the five stem combinations early, because they drive half the readings in the tradition. 甲己合化土, 乙庚合化金, 丙辛合化水, 丁壬合化木, 戊癸合化火, five pairs and five transformed elements. Now ask which pair transforms into the season's element. Fire months take 戊癸, the pair that becomes fire. Water months take 丙辛, the pair that becomes water, and the same question answers itself through the metal months with 乙庚 and the wood months with 丁壬.
Four rows, four hits, no leftover pairs anywhere in the chapter. Xiu is the transformation partner of de.
The manual states the table and never states the rule. I have checked the four rows against the combination cycle more than once, and the correspondence is exact, so it belongs to the text rather than to my imagination.
One asymmetry stays open. Water months carry a second de, 戊己, and a matching second xiu, 甲己, because that pair transforms into earth. No other row doubles up. Why water alone receives an earth entry I have not found a source for, and I would rather print the gap than invent a doctrine. The reading I use in a session is that water is the one element of the four with no natural boundary, so the chapter gives it a bank. Fire already has one in the wood that feeds it.
What the marker promises, and the clause attached
The verdict in the chapter reads 凡人命中得此徳秀無破衝尅壓者,賦性聰明溫厚和氣. Whoever carries de xiu undamaged by clash, punishment or suppression is intelligent, warm and even-tempered.
Read the condition closely, because it sits inside the promise rather than beside it. The very next clause adds 若遇學堂更帶財官主貴, which says the marker plus an Academy star, wealth and officer stars reads as rank and officeholding. Then comes the damper. 衝尅減力. Clash and control reduce the force.
So the star names a quality that can arrive intact or arrive in a smaller version. That line is the reason I find it useful with clients, and the reason I find it dangerous in the hands of anyone who reads charts as verdicts. A person can be told they hold the star of natural refinement, and the same text can be used to explain why their life never quite showed it.
Where the psychology sits
Jung gives the gap a name. Persona, from the Latin for mask, is the face a person turns toward the world. His own definition in Two Essays on Analytical Psychology is precise about the design: a kind of mask, worn to make a definite impression on others and to conceal the true nature of the individual (Jung, 1953, p.190).
He is less interested in the mask itself than in the wearer's ability to step out from behind it. In Memories, Dreams, Reflections he puts the risk in one image, the professor who has become his textbook and the tenor who has become his voice.
De xiu describes the opposite situation. It names material that is supposed to be the person's own, which is why the damage clause matters more than the promise. When the marker is pressed by clash, the warmth survives and it comes out as politeness. The person still behaves well, and something in the behaviour has lost its floor.
A mask that copies competence gets tested by the world and caught. Virtue is harder to catch, because the world rewards the copy every single day and nobody asks the wearer what it costs.
What I do with it in a session
I rarely name the star. Naming it gives a client a new label, and the chart already handed them enough of those.
What I do instead is ask about the moment of stopping. If you left the room without saying the generous thing, what would be missing? Most people answer with a social consequence, someone disappointed, a room going cold. The ones who hold the marker intact answer differently. They report a loss of contact with themselves, as though a dial had clicked off. That answer is worth more than the stem count.
The exercise I give is deliberately small. Write down the last time you were generous and nobody found out. If nothing comes back from the past year, the de is working and the xiu is being spent on an audience.
Two clients this year carried the same fire-month de and the difference between them was instructive. The first had it pressed by a punishment in the day pillar and read to me as pleasant and completely unreachable, agreeable in every sentence and absent behind it. The second carried it clean and was difficult company in the honest way, quick to disagree and warm once the disagreement finished, and only one of the two had a temper of her own.
Tracing this by hand takes a minute. The BaZi calculator lays out the four pillars if you want the whole chart at once.
The woman who came in described as good
She carried the marker with a clash sitting on it, and the chart agreed with the room. Everyone around her called her good, and she was good, in the way a door that will not close is shut. What she did not have was a reason to be warm that belonged to her rather than to the room.
We spent a session on the difference between being kind and keeping the peace, two things that look identical from outside and feel nothing alike from inside. She left with one question to test during the week, which was what she would do first if the answer could not disappoint anyone.
Two weeks later she wrote to tell me she had taken the long route home and told nobody why. Small, and hers.
