A woman I read for last spring had passed four professional exams in five years and still could not tell me what she was good at. She came back in August asking whether her chart supported one more, a certification due in September. It was the fourth time she had brought me a test instead of a question about herself.

The question underneath hers is the one this article takes up. Not whether a chart can call an exam result. What the Ming manual means when it says a chart holds learning, and what it means when it adds that the learning is empty.

Xue tang is a BaZi marker that puts the growth stage of an element on a specific pillar, with a second condition attached, and ci guan is its partner at the same element's full-strength stage. The pair sits in 三命通會, the compendium first printed in 1578, in a chapter headed 論學堂詞館, with the star of the top graduate tacked on at the end as an appendix.

The room and the desk

The chapter opens with a schoolroom comparison. 夫學堂者,如人讀書之在學堂. The academy is where a person reads. 詞館者,如今官翰林謂之詞館, the hall of phrases is what the Hanlin Academy is called, and the gloss gives the reason: 取其學業精專,文章出類, the study there is precise and the writing leaves its class behind.

Then the mechanics, which are two lines long and easy to check. 長生乃學堂之正位, the growth stage is the academy's proper seat. 臨官乃詞館之正位, the official stage is the hall's. Worked out for metal: 金命見辛巳. Metal is born in 巳. Convert 辛巳 to its paired element and you get 白蠟金, white wax metal, so the pillar and the element agree. For the second seat, 金命見壬申, metal reaches its official stage in 申, and 壬申 is 劍鋒金, sword-point metal.

That double test is the whole trick. 乙巳 is also a 巳 pillar, and it is lamp fire, so it does not qualify no matter what sits in the chart around it. The element has to be standing on its own stage in its own voice.

One branch, two directions

Metal ends up with two seats in this system, 巳 for intake and 申 for output, and the chapter treats them as two different jobs. The first is where the element is fed. The second is where it is old enough to be handed to someone else.

I use that split constantly and rarely use the star names. It lets a chart describe a person who reads everything and finishes nothing, and a different person who produces steadily with no visible source. The first carries a seat with no hall. The second has built a hall on nothing, which the chapter would call the cheaper kind of learning and which clients usually call burnout.

The five rows

The growth and official stages are fixed, and the paired elements are fixed, so the list can be derived rather than memorised.

  • Metal, growth in 巳, 辛巳 white wax metal, official in 申, 壬申 sword-point metal.
  • Water, growth in 申, 甲申 spring water, official in 亥, 癸亥 ocean water.
  • Wood, growth in 亥, 己亥 flatland wood, official in 寅, 庚寅 pine wood.
  • Fire, growth in 寅, 丙寅 furnace fire, official in 午, 戊午 sky fire.
  • Earth, growth in 申, 戊申 highway earth, official in 亥, 丁亥 roof earth.
  • One detail the chapter leaves out: 申 is the growth seat for both water and earth, and 亥 the official seat for both. The paired element says which one is standing there. 甲申 and 戊申 share a branch and nothing else.

What the chapter is afraid of

The section turns dark halfway through, and the turn is the useful part. 凡學堂詞館切不要犯空亡及衝破, avoid the void, avoid the clash, and 支干納音不要見尅, do not let the paired element be controlled. A seat that takes a hit stops working as a seat.

Then the verdicts, which are the reason I keep this chapter open. 祝勝經 on a broken configuration: 甲辰丙寅學堂不眞, a false academy, 讀書修學空有虛名, a life of reading and study with only empty fame. 三車 says something sharper: 學堂無氣,惟利師儒, an academy with no strength suits teachers and scholars and nothing grander.

I read that line as an observation about transmission rather than a demotion. Some people end up carrying a subject to the next person rather than using it themselves, and a chart that shows this is not showing a failure. 理愚歌 adds the opposite case, 學堂如更朝驛馬,位極勲高壓天下, an academy seat facing the horse star reaches very high office, so the same seat scaled by a second marker moves from classroom to court.

Why the later master loosened the rule

By the time 子平 gets to the question he has stopped requiring the day stem at all. 不必專論日干,但柱中帶寅申巳亥便為有學. Any chart holding 寅, 申, 巳 or 亥 counts as having learning, because 此四宮聚天地間至清之氣, those four palaces gather the clearest qi in the world, and a month that falls in one of them is 不寒不熱,風氣自然清雅溫和, neither cold nor hot, naturally clear and mild.

The other eight branches get graded down. 子午卯酉為四敗,其氣濁, the four defeats, muddy qi. 辰戌丑未為四庫,其氣雜, the four storehouses, mixed qi. It is a blunt instrument and he knows it, which is why he adds the caution about the month pillar and then the line that every parent should hear. 若八字不見,最忌五七歲交敗死二運,縱有嚴師也難訓化. No seat in the chart, and a luck cycle turning toward defeat and death between five and seven, and even a strict teacher cannot reach the child.

That sentence is about timing. Ability never enters it. It also happens to be the most humane line in the chapter, since it puts the failure outside the child.

    The star above the star

The appendix hands the same question to the examination system. 甲辰一旬十二位謂之魁星. The chapter calls the decade's positions the kui xing, the star of the top graduate, and picks four of them: 甲辰, 丁未, 庚戌, 癸丑. The reason given is 取逐方旺氣加於辰戌丑未之上, take the strength of each direction and set it on the tomb branch of each season, and wood is strong in the east, fire in the south, metal in the west, water in the north.

The rule it never writes down is the good part. Each stem carries the polarity of its tomb branch. 甲 on 辰 and 庚 on 戌 make yang pairs, 丁 on 未 and 癸 on 丑 make yin ones. Four for four. That is why the south gets 丁 rather than 丙 and the north gets 癸 rather than 壬. The chapter also prints 十二位 for a decade that holds ten pillars from 甲辰 to 癸丑, a small flaw I would rather report than smooth over.

It then adds three kui xing days, 丁亥, 辛卯 and 庚戌, plus a method for finding the star from the year stem, 癸巳人從寅上遁起甲寅丁巳庚申癸亥, which runs off the month-stem rule. I did it and it holds.

The man with the diploma on the wall

Jung named the problem this chapter circles. The persona, he wrote, is "a kind of mask, designed on the one hand to make a definite impression upon others, and on the other to conceal the true nature of the individual" (Persona, psychology). Reading further into that article stopped me, because the examples are exactly the ones this chapter worries about. A strong ego relates to the world through a flexible persona, and "identifications with a specific persona (doctor, scholar, artist, etc.) inhibits psychological development."

The scholar is named in the source. 讀書修學空有虛名 is the same diagnosis in another language: a seat, a hall, a title, and nobody standing behind the title. Jung put the end state plainly: "the danger is that people become identical with their personas, the professor with his textbook, the tenor with his voice."

So the exercise I set for clients who come asking about exams has nothing to do with exams. 空有虛名 names the moment a person's learning becomes a mask they cannot take off, and Jung thought that mask had to come apart before anything real could grow, "the dissolution of the persona is therefore absolutely necessary for individuation."

    The exercise

Two columns on paper. Left, what I know without looking it up. Right, what I have made that another person has used.

Most clients find the left column long and the right column short, and the gap has a shape. An academy with no hall attached, a seat where the water collects and no channel leaves it.

Then the shadow question, and I ask it slowly: where did I learn this, and who was I trying to become while I learned it. That second half is the one that produces the silence.

The chapter closes its own argument with a line that outranks every star in it. 况人命入格合造化,又不在學堂詞館而得. A chart that forms a proper pattern does not need these markers at all. Learning shows up in the life, and the seat is only a note in the margin saying where to look.

This article is offered for spiritual guidance and entertainment purposes only. It is not a substitute for medical, legal, or financial advice.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is xue tang in BaZi?▼
It is a marker that places the growth stage of an element on a specific pillar, with one extra condition attached. The branch has to be that element's growth seat, and the pillar's paired element has to be the same element. For metal the seat is 巳, so 辛巳, white wax metal, qualifies and 乙巳, lamp fire, does not.
What is the difference between xue tang and ci guan?▼
Same element, two stages. Xue tang uses the growth stage, where the element is being fed, and ci guan uses the official stage, where it is fully grown and serving. The chapter treats the first as the academy and the second as the Hanlin Academy, the place where study turns into documents. A chart can carry one without the other.
Does xue tang mean I will pass my exams?▼
In my practice it does not, and I say so to clients who ask. The chapter's own verdict on a broken seat is 讀書修學空有虛名, studying and studying with only empty fame, which describes the credential rather than the result. What the seat describes is appetite for learning and the ability to turn it into work other people can use.
Why does the chapter warn about the void and clashes?▼
凡學堂詞館切不要犯空亡及衝破, the text says, avoid the void and avoid the clash, and do not let the paired element be controlled. A seat that gets hit reads as study that never settles into anything. The chapter gives it a name, a false academy, and a line I quote to parents, that even a strict teacher cannot reach a child whose luck cycle turns bad at five to seven.
What is kui xing in this same chapter?▼
The star of the top graduate in the old examination system. The chapter picks four pillars from one decade, 甲辰, 丁未, 庚戌 and 癸丑, by putting the stem that is strong in each direction onto the tomb branch of each season. The rule it never states is that the stem's polarity always matches the branch's, which is why the south gets 丁 and the north gets 癸.
