A golden ram standing on dark rock under an indigo night sky, three faint stars curving above it, golden light and deep shadow, painterly celestial art

The man across from me had a wrist in a cast and a spreadsheet open on his phone. He broke the wrist three weeks earlier loading a truck for his brother's move, worked through it, and told nobody at the office. When I asked how he was sleeping, he laughed and said he wasn't. Four hours, maybe five. He called it his normal setting.

I asked what he did with the frustration.

Nothing, he said. I do the next thing.

He was 41 and had been running on that sentence since he was 15.

Aries is a cardinal fire sign, the first sign of the zodiac, ruled by Mars and covering roughly March 21 to April 19. It maps the psyche's forward edge: the starting impulse, the appetite to move before the situation is safe, and the part of a person that would rather act and correct later Aries.

The Ram That Carried Two Children

Heaven draws this sign as a ram with curled horns, and the story behind it starts with a family in trouble. Phrixus and Helle were the children of King Athamas and his first wife Nephele. Their stepmother Ino wanted them gone, so she ruined the harvest in Boeotia and forged a message from the Oracle of Delphi saying the boy had to be sacrificed to end the famine Aries.

A ram with a golden fleece arrived, sent by Hermes in most tellings, and carried both children east. Helle fell into the water between Europe and Asia and drowned, and the strait took her name. Phrixus reached Colchis, sacrificed the ram to Zeus, and hung the fleece in a grove guarded by a dragon. A generation later Jason sailed after it.

Look at what the ram does in that story. Carrying. The animal gets remembered as the fighter, and its job was transport under bad conditions. Aries mythology is a rescue run.

Hamal, the brightest star, is an orange giant 66 light-years away at magnitude 2.0, about as bright as Mars looks at its most distant Hamal. Its name comes from the Arabic for head of the ram. Ptolemy catalogued the group among his 48 constellations in the second century.

Aries also holds a title it no longer earns. When the Greeks fixed the zodiac, the Sun crossed the celestial equator into Aries at the March equinox. Precession has since pushed that crossing into Pisces, around 68 BCE by most reckoning. Astronomy texts still call it the first point of Aries. The beginning left and the name stayed put, which is a fair warning about every label in this system.

Mars, the Planet Nobody Reassigned

Mars rules Aries, and this sign is the one place a classical ruler survived every update. Uranus went to Aquarius in 1781 and Neptune to Pisces in 1846. Pluto landed on Scorpio in 1930. Aries kept Mars.

The planet runs a 687-day orbit and turns retrograde roughly every 26 months for ten weeks at a stretch Mars. In a chart it covers drive, appetite, and the ability to want something out loud.

The Roman Mars protected farmland and boundary stones as well as soldiers, which is why the third month of the year carries his name. Tuesday carries it in most European languages. The energy behind this sign is the energy that plows a field in March.

The First House and the Mask You Were Given

Astrology gives Aries the first house: the body, the face, physical vitality, and the version of you that arrives in a room before you say anything House. It sits on the Ascendant, the horizon at birth.

Jung used the word persona for that surface, the mask a person assembles to meet the world. His line on the work of a life is blunt. The aim of individuation is nothing less than to divest the self of the false wrappings of the persona persona.

For a Mars-ruled sign, the mask gets built around competence. Aries children work out early that being the one who handles it earns approval, and the strategy hardens years before anyone could explain it.

Jung also wrote that the dominant function characterizes consciousness while its opposite is repressed and characterizes the unconscious (Psychological Types, 1921). Applied here, the more a person leads with action, the further feeling and reflection get pushed out of the light. Aries charts often carry the strongest will in the room attached to someone who cannot say they are tired.

The shadow of this sign rarely looks like rage from the inside. It looks like a calendar. I have listened to Aries clients describe years of it: the promotion they did not want, the relationship they maintained by out-planning it.

Jung described the first stage as a dead balance, a standstill, the stage the alchemists called nigredo. Every descent is followed by an ascent Shadow. The stoic in my office spent two sessions telling me he did not need the sessions.

Libra, the Other Shore

Every sign faces an opposite, and Aries faces Libra across the first and seventh houses. Libra handles the negotiation, the scale, the agreement that costs one side something. Aries starts the thing. Libra weighs who has to live with it.

An Aries who cannot stand Libra usually cannot stand one specific moment. It is the pause before a decision, when somebody asks who else was consulted.

A want that never meets another person's veto is a mood. The seventh house is where the mood turns into a life.

What the Sky Is Doing

Pluto entered Aquarius in 2024 and stays until 2043, in your eleventh house of groups, networks, and the long future.

Jupiter moved into Leo in July 2026 and remains until June 2027, in the fifth house of play, romance, and the thing you would make with no client attached. The year's luck sits in the part of your life with no deadline on it.

Saturn has been in Aries since May 2025 and stays until 2028, retrograde through this autumn, in the first house of the body and the name. Neptune sits in the same sign and the same house and blurs the edges of what Saturn is fencing, so the season keeps asking what you are carrying and how much of it was ever yours.

Venus works through Scorpio all month, in the eighth house of shared money, debt, and intimacy. Uranus went retrograde in Gemini on September 10, in the third house of speech, siblings, and the daily exchange. Libra season opens on September 22, 2026, with Mercury already there, both in the seventh house of partnership. The first quarter on September 18 lands in your ninth house and asks what the whole effort is for. The Full Moon on September 26, 2026 falls in Aries, in the first house, in the same room as Saturn.

Read together, the light is in the fifth house of making, the friction sits on the body in the first, and the instruction arrives in the seventh, where someone else gets a vote.

Working With It

Start with the sentence. Before you act on a want, say it out loud in a room with another person in it. One sentence, no preamble. The want does not need to be large. It needs your name on it and a witness.

Second, give the anger a floor to land on. Twenty minutes of something physical that leaves you breathing hard, done on the day it shows up. Mine was a rowing machine in a garage for years, and a week with it or without it changed how I answered email. Mars needs a field to plow.

Third, ask for one thing a week. Small, specific, and inconvenient enough that the answer could be no. A lift to the airport. The ram in the myth carried two children across a sea and never once got carried, which is a story about an unpaid ledger.

What the Client Found

Six weeks in, he asked his brother to take the truck to the shop. The brother said yes before the sentence finished and drove him home. He spent forty minutes in the passenger seat with nothing to do and later described it as the worst part of his year.

He still wakes at five. The wrist healed on its own schedule. In our last session he told me his shoulder rotated all the way again, and that he had started saying the sentence to his wife. I am not doing that one. She said okay, and he seemed mildly annoyed about how easy it was.

The cast came off in October. He kept the spreadsheet.
