The session started with a list. This year's numbers, then last year's, then the year before, and he wanted me to read all of it at once and leave nothing out. Director at forty-six, two exits behind him, a third offer on the table. What he said next is the sentence I remember. He did not know how to be in a room without being in charge of it.
The Tiger is a Chinese zodiac sign built on the Earthly Branch Yin (寅), a yang Wood branch that rules the northeast, the first month of spring, and the two hours before sunrise. Three stems hide inside it, so the branch holds Wood at full height with fire already kindled beneath. The tradition reads the animal as courage and command. I read the branch as pressure: force that has begun to move while still held under a lid.
His year pillar was Yin, and so was his month. Two Tigers in one chart changes what a reading is about.
The Branch Behind the Animal
Yin takes the third seat of the twelve, yang Wood, the opening month of spring, the window from 03:00 to 05:00.
The character is older than the animal list. The Shuowen Jiezi, the Han dictionary, defines 寅 with a picture rather than a concept. In the first month the yang qi stirs and leaves the Yellow Springs, wanting out, while yin is still strong. The character carries a roof, 宀. The energy presses from below and does not get past it.
Three stems hide inside the branch. Jia is yang Wood and takes the principal seat, with Bing Fire in the middle and Wu Earth in the residue. Jia Wood reaches its own prosperity here, which the classical sources put plainly as 甲統於寅. Fire and earth are born at the same station.
The Sanming Tonghui, the Ming compendium, gives the branch a schedule. Within the Yin month the three stems hold office in turn: Wu Earth five days, Bing Fire five, then Jia Wood for twenty. Spring does not begin green.
The Hour Before Dawn
Yin runs from 03:00 to 05:00. The Han-era name for that window is 平旦, the flat light, when the night has thinned far enough that shapes come back into view.
Two of the twenty-eight lunar mansions sit in the Yin palace, and one carries the animal's own name. 尾火虎, the Tail, Fire, Tiger, is eighteen degrees wide. Its neighbour 箕水豹, the Winnowing Basket, Water, Leopard, holds nine, and a branch that keeps a tiger and a leopard on the same ground tells you what the hour is for.
Tiger Years and the Element on Top
| Years | Element | Step in the sixty |
|---|---|---|
| 1926, 1986 | Fire | 3 |
| 1938, 1998 | Earth | 15 |
| 1950, 2010 | Metal | 27 |
| 1962, 2022 | Water | 39 |
| 1974, 2034 | Wood | 51 |
The last Tiger year was 2022, a Water Tiger running from February 1, 2022 to January 21, 2023. The next is 2034, a Wood Tiger.
The Month That Opens Spring
Yin is the month that starts the solar year for a BaZi practitioner, opening at Li Chun and closing at Jing Zhe, February 4 to March 6.
The Book of Rites gives the month a note. Its Monthly Ordinances pair the twelve months with the twelve pitch pipes, and the first month of spring is 律中太簇, tuned to Taicu.
The first month also carries its own figure in the calendar of twelve, Hexagram 11, Tai, Peace: earth above heaven, the inversion where the two currents finally cross, three firm lines newly grown from below. That page calls Tai the open channel, the season when the small departs and the great arrives. Tai is the third step of a sequence. The Rat month holds Fu, one returning yang line. The Ox month holds Lin, two. The Tiger month holds Tai, three.
In the current cycle Li Chun falls on February 4, 2027 at 09:46 Beijing time. This year's Tiger month is written Geng Yin, a yang Metal stem on a yang Wood branch.
What the Tradition Hands You
Read the classical columns and you get a strong list: brave, confident, independent, charismatic, decisive, protective of their own people. Then the list turns. Impulsive. Impatient with process. Unable to take an order. Prone to lose the room in the attempt to hold it.
Both halves describe one quality of attention. A person built to break a stalled situation open reads every stall the same way. It needs breaking. Households and companies find that useful until the stall is gone and the breaking continues, and nothing in the list covers what happens when the Tiger is the one who needs help.
Wood That Lights Its Own Fire
Yin combines with the Pig, 寅亥合, and the pair resolves into Wood. The Pig post covers the other half: Hai stores wood inside water, and Yin is where it stands up.
The Fire trine is Tiger, Horse and Dog, 寅午戌, and Yin is its birth station. That one is live this year. 2026 is a Fire Horse year running from February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027, which puts the year branch inside the Tiger's own trine, alongside the Dog. The year supplies heat, and the question becomes what you do with a fire you did not have to light.
The clash is Tiger against Monkey, 寅申, wood against metal. Clients describe it as a plan meeting a blade, or as the person in the room who keeps asking for the procedure. The harm is Tiger against Snake, 寅巳. Harm works underground. It turns up as friction that never resolves into a fight, inside relationships that look fine from outside.
Tiger, Snake and Monkey also form the three-branch punishment 寅巳申, and the sources split on its name. The majority reading, from the Song collection 三車一覽 and repeated in the Ming compendium 五行精紀, calls it 無恩之刑: the punishment of ingratitude. The mechanism is exact. Each branch generates something, then damages its own product. Yin gives birth to fire and attacks the fire in Si. A minority of publishers assign that label to the other triad, the reading I used in the Dog post.
The Shadow of Power
One line of Jung's separates the two poles of this branch. In The Psychology of the Transference he wrote:
> "Where love rules, there is no will to power; and where power predominates, there love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other."
Carl Jung spent a career on that pairing, and the sentence describes a Tiger chart's failure mode. A person whose competence was built on deciding will find the decisions multiplying: the work gets easier and the room gets emptier.
The second layer is the Shuowen image. A branch whose whole picture is pressure under a roof produces people who read any restraint as temporary and never learn to operate inside one. A Tiger who has spent twenty years waiting for the lid to come off has usually built something that needs the lid on.
The same structure shows up in Jung's Psychological Types. The dominant function builds consciousness, and its opposite is pushed down into the unconscious. For a chart carried on assertion, the repressed material is receptivity. The strength is real, and the blind side sits exactly opposite it.
Working With a Tiger Chart
Three moves, in the order I use them.
Separate the decision from the identity. Write down the last five things you decided, then mark the ones that required you personally. Most Tiger charts run a long list with no gaps in it.
Find the counterweight. A branch at full power is cooled by Water and checked by Metal. Look for the element that can hold this one down, then work with it on purpose.
Ask for something small, out loud. The classical weakness of the sign is that it does not ask, and it calls that self-sufficiency. Pick one thing you can say in a sentence and say it to a person who can answer.
Journal prompt. Write what you would lose if you stopped being the one in charge, then read your answer twice.
What the Man Chose
He took the third role. Four months later he sent two lines: the company had not fallen apart, and he had started asking a colleague for input on hiring, which he called the hardest habit he had ever tried to build.
A month after that came one more line. He had been in four meetings where he did not speak first. Nobody had seemed to notice.
