A woman once told me her life restarted on a schedule: every twelve years something ended, a job, a marriage, a flat she loved. She came in asking which year would be safe. I asked instead what she was doing in each of those years, and the answer was the same three words every time. BaZi has a name for the moment a pattern closes over you, and the chapter that names it spends most of its length counting how long the catch lasts.
Tian luo di wang is a pair of markers built from the four corners of the Chinese compass. The heaven net, tian luo, is carried by 戌 and 亥 in the northwest, and the earth web, di wang, by 辰 and 巳 in the southeast. The pair describes the end of a direction, a place where the map stops and the light goes dim.
Why the corners and not the clashes
The chapter 論天羅地網 in 三命通會 (first printed in 1578) makes its case in a little over a hundred characters. It opens by conceding the obvious. The idea of a net is clear enough. He then asks why these four branches rather than any others.
His answer is astronomical. The sky tilts to the northwest, and 戌 and 亥 are the end of the six yin branches. The earth sinks to the southeast, and 辰 and 巳 are the end of the six yang. Then the clause that carries the weight. When yin and yang reach their extremity, things go dark, like a person inside a net.
Other markers take their teeth from a clash, a punishment or a broken triad, and this one takes them from the edge of the compass. Nothing has gone wrong in a chart that carries it. The manual reads the end of a quarter as darkness for the same reason a map past its border stops being useful.
The net has a grain
The commentary the chapter copies from 壺中子 adds the part I use.
Dragon and snake mixed together, unfavorable for the one born in 辰. The pair is 辰 and 巳. Pig and dog invade each other, and the objection lands on 亥. Pig is 亥 and dog is 戌, the northwest corner.
Then the sentence that turns a label into a description. Someone born on 辰 who meets 巳 carries the heavy form, and someone born on 巳 who meets 辰 carries the light one. A dragon born into a snake's hole retreats. A snake born into a dragon's hole advances.
The dog and pig pair runs the same way with the values reversed. A dog that enters a herd of pigs advances, and a pig that enters a pack of dogs gets bitten. Same two branches, opposite outcome, and the only variable is which one you were born on. Wood has a grain, and so does this marker. You can plane with it all day and fight it for an hour.
Men, women, and a filing system
The chapter hands out one allocation by sex. The books say the dragon-snake mix warns of danger to women, the pig-dog pair of hardship for men, so men fear the heaven net and women fear the earth web.
That is a tenth-century filing system, and I keep it in the article because it sits in the text. I do not use it in readings. In fifteen years of consultations I have yet to find that the sex of a client changes whether a branch pair bites.
Two of the five elements have no net
Fire charts carry the heaven net. Water and earth charts carry the earth web, and metal and wood charts carry neither. The chapter says so plainly.
Read that again if you have been treated as though every difficult marker applies to you: two of five elements are exempt from the most feared pair in the technical layer. The chapter gives no reason, so I will not invent one. The line sets a boundary, and a boundary is useful when somebody wants to sell you a remedy.
The count, which is the strange part
The last section is where 三命通會 starts measuring. A child born on the first day of a 戌 month in a 戌 year carries one year of the heaven net. A child born on the fifteenth day carries fifteen. If the birth hour is also 戌, add fifteen and the count reaches thirty.
The manual has turned a birth date into a duration. The day of the lunar month becomes years, and the hour, which carries no number, gets the largest contribution its slot can hold. Then the arithmetic stops at thirty, half of the sexagenary cycle. One paragraph will not tell me whether that ceiling is deliberate, and I would rather say so than build a rule above it. 重犯 doubles the position when the branches cross over, a 戌 year meeting a 亥 month or a 亥 hour meeting a 戌 day, 則災不能歇. A luck pillar arriving on these branches behaves the same way. The net is a slot on a calendar with a measured length, and thirty years of sixty leaves thirty free.
Jung's fifth of a second
Carl Jung worked at the Burghölzli, the psychiatric clinic of Zurich University, from 1900 to 1908. There he ran word association tests. A hundred words were read aloud, each answer timed in fifths of a second. Francis Galton had invented the method in 1879, and Jung turned it into a detector. Words that produced a delay or a flush of feeling touched what he called a feeling-toned complex.
A complex, he wrote, behaves like a foreign body inside the mind, with its own wholeness and only partial control by the conscious mind. The definition depth psychology now uses is blunter: emotions, memories, perceptions and wishes gather in response to a threat to the stability of the self.
Put the two instruments side by side. Jung timed the catch in fifths of a second. The Chinese manual times it in years counted off the day of the lunar month, with a ceiling at half the cycle. One measures how fast the reaction arrives, the other how long the season runs, and neither answers the question my client brought in. The pair gives you a loop with a trigger and a length. The chart supplies the trigger, and the complex supplies the content, usually a threat to how you see yourself. I watched a client in a heavy 辰 year use almost the same sentences she had used eleven years earlier, and the words came from her complex rather than her situation.
What I do with a chart carrying it
Does the chart carry it at all? Metal and wood charts skip the section. Fire charts look to 戌 and 亥, water and earth charts to 辰 and 巳, and I check the day pillar before the hour.
Which direction? 辰 meeting 巳 and 巳 meeting 辰 are not interchangeable, and the difference is a role rather than a fate: one is a guest in someone else's house, the other is the host. Clients who tell me they always end up adapting to a room usually have the light form.
When did it fire before? I ask for three dates when the same thing happened and read those years against the marker, because a pattern that returns on a schedule is workable in a way a curse is not. Jung's patients never lost their complexes, and they stopped being run by them once they could name them.
I do not sell removals, and the chapter lists no procedure for taking the net off a chart.
A page to write
Two columns. On the left, the last three times this happened, with month and year, and on the right the role you held each time: guest, heir, rival, servant, witness.
Then one question per line: what would you have done from inside the other role? Write the answer even where it sounds wrong. The aim is to learn whether the loop is a position you keep taking or a personality you believe you have.
Jung's test looked for delay, and delay is visible from outside. Yours is noticing the same sentence leave your mouth in a room you have never been in before.
What the chapter promises
Then the author spends his length on the corners, the grain, the elements and the count, and that ordering is the teaching. A net at the edge of a compass, with a grain you can read and a length you can measure, describes a shape a life takes at the end of a direction. Thirty years of sixty is the worst case the manual prints. Three dates on a page will tell you whether your own schedule follows it.
